A PROJECT BY

Welcome to Green Mama Compost, where we turn waste into wonder and dreams into green reality. Our mission? To tackle the chronic waste problem head-on and transform communities through the magic of composting. But there's so much more to our story—let's dig in

WHO WE ARE

Green Mama Compost Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization registered in the state of Virginia, USA, and operating in and around Antigua, Guatemala. We’re structured for growth and impact, ensuring that every contribution counts. In Guatemala, we operate under the banner of Volverse Tierra, an NGO dedicated to sharing environmental initiatives, the literal translation of volverse tierra – “becoming earth.”
Why the dual identity? It's all about strategic impact. This setup allows us to secure international grants and move resources efficiently and seamlessly across borders.

OUR MISSION & VALUES

We’re more than just a composting project. Green Mama Compost is a project of Volverse Tierra ONG, an NGO focused on education, community transformation, and environmental sustainability.
We aim to:
  • Empower communities to reduce waste and enrich their soil.
  • Provide bilingual education on composting and sustainability.
  • Develop future innovative projects like children’s books and educational programs, each with its own unique identity.

OUR LEGAL STRUCTURE

In Guatemala, we are known as “Volverse Tierra, ONG.” This dual registration helps us maximize our impact and secure the necessary funding to keep growing.
In the USA, we are Green Mama Compost Inc., a non-profit corporation with a mission to make composting mainstream. Our leadership includes:
  • Virginia Wheaton, President
  • Luís Antonio Irías Cordon, Secretary
  • Devin O’Donoghue, Treasurer

OUR GOAL

Our ultimate goal is to grow, expand, and seize future opportunities to create a sustainable and green future. We believe in the power of composting to change the world—one bucket at a time.

Top 20 most Frequently Asked Questions about composting

  • We send you a list of what can and can’t go into the bucket. You fill it during the week and on your scheduled day we pick it up and replace it with a clean one.

  • Jocotenango, Antigua Guatemala, Ciudad Vieja, and San Miguel Dueñas.

  • The service is a month-to-month subscription with an initial fee of 150Q (this includes your first month and bucket fee). The following months are Q50 for biweekly pickups and between Q75 - Q100 (on a sliding scale according to your possibilities) for weekly pickups.

  • Send us a message on WhatsApp.

  • We are happy to work with you! Please let us know at least a day in advance so that we can make the necessary arrangements. Otherwise, your pickup will have to wait an additional week. You may be interested in our bucket security system which, depending on where you live, can be a big help, both for you and for us!

  • Feel free to share the bucket (and the do’s and don’ts) with a neighbor or friend if it works for you. However, for smoother logistics we will only contact one person and come to one pickup location.

  • No problem! You can add another bucket to your service for an extra charge. We also accept yard and garden waste in bags for Q10 per bag.

  • We now offer pickups twice a month!  But remember that you can put items beyond food waste in your bucket. A wide range of items, from cardboard to egg cartons, can be composted as long as they are broken up into small pieces.

  • It is certainly possible, depending largely on the waste you produce, how decomposed it is, and how frequently we pick it up. Meat and dairy waste produces unpleasant odors more quickly than vegetable waste does. We suggest a weekly pickup if you’re concerned about odors. Make sure the bucket lid remains fully closed!

  • When the lid is tightly closed, you can trust that it won't. However, sometimes insects and their eggs hitchhike on vegetable peels and end up in the bucket. Don’t worry too much about the insects, as they are part of the process and will be dealt with at our site. If you are bothered by them, we have some ideas! We recommend using a countertop container with a lid for easy disposal of scraps. Keeping our bucket outside will also help. Another way to prevent insects is by freezing your food waste in an airtight container and transferring it to the bucket on pickup day. Finally, you can try adding a handful of sawdust into your bucket after adding food waste in and see if that helps.

  • Yes, as long as you don’t mix it with non-compostable elements. Please toss the dust from your dustbin after sweeping your floors into the trash!

  • Yes, you can compost both human and animal hair. Put hair in our bucket!

  • No.

  • No, we kindly request that you keep poop out of our buckets.

  • You can use compost to enrich soil, sprout seeds, feed plants, enhance soil quality, rejuvenate pots, and revitalize lawns. When you buy a bag of our compost, you’ll receive a guide with recommendations of how to use it. Or check out our website!

  • At least once a year. Be sure to aerate your lawn with a pitchfork first!

  • Not all of them. To be sure, conduct a moisture test: If the product (such as cardboard, compostable take out containers, and paper products) absorbs moisture when wet, it's compostable. If you're not sure, take a photo and send it to us, and we'll give you the answer.

  • It's unlikely that our composting system can break down biodegradable products. In Guatemala, to be labeled “biodegradable,” products only need to contain 25% organic material, which means they may include plastic that won't break down when we compost them. On the other hand, it’s likely that items labeled "compostable" will break down in our system, but they can also add microplastics to the compost.

  • Cups are typically lined with plastic, making them non-compostable and non-recyclable, and therefore considered trash.

  • While it is a tedious task, we diligently sort through the waste during processing. Please help us reduce the sorting tasks. Feel free to ask us for clarification on acceptable items.
